Background

At present Count von Staufer is working on his Protected Area Management PhD which considers the impact of legislation on conservation areas in Spain and the UK. His contacts include politicians, European legislators, academics and tourism developers.

Originally trained in Meteorology and Civil Aviation, he has been active in conservation since the late 1960's. He has commented on the London third airport enquiry, airport regionalisation, fishery conservation in Wales & Scotland, protected area legislation, water conservation, rural economy and sustainable tourism.

In the 1980's he was a consultant to LWI, for joint sustainable tourism ventures with Bord Failte (Eire) and the Government of Ontario. Throughout the 1990's he has given evidence to the Presidential committee on Rural Tourism under the Clinton administration, assisted in the setting up of a major cultural development in Hakodate Japan, managed a conservation area in the Wye Valley AONB, and was the founding vice chairman of Wye Valley Tourism.

He has experience in local politics and conservation administration, having been instrumental in resolving several long-standing environmental disputes. His attitude to solving problems is always based on what is achievable in the short term coupled with an evolutionary programme that develops a favourable long-term outcome.

Although at heart he is committed to the ideal of international co-operation and is a firm believer in the value of European environmental integration, he is nevertheless a realist in recognising the need to educate at a local level. He also believes that vested interests need to conserve for their own wellbeing, as well as reaping any PR benefits that may accrue. To this end he is experienced in creating media interest both locally and nationally.

He is always looking towards the global long-term trend and is firmly of the opinion that we must begin moulding opinion now, in order to address the inevitable evolution of all environmental agendas whose consequences will impact many future generations.

With a raft of editorial and broadcasting experience all reports generated are lucid in plain English, avoiding impenetrable 'techno-speak'. Being a frequent broadcaster and speaking four European languages he is happy with fielding the media recognising the need to use all methods of dissemination as a means of influencing opinion.

Married to an internationally published author and broadcaster with three grown children two of whom live abroad, his personal interests include reading, angling and winter sports.
